Strecha, Prague

Front of Strecha

Prior to our very first trip to Prague back in 2020 we were told that the Czech capital was one of the best cities to go to for vegan food. However what we actually saw for ourselves suggested otherwise – most of the restaurants were very meat-heavy. Thankfully for vegans that’s not to say that you can’t enjoy a meal out that does not involve meat or dairy, in fact there are plenty of places available that are at least vegan-friendly or even fully vegan, indeed we discovered Countrylife and Pastva on previous trips to Prague, and my wife has also tried out a vegan chain eatery in one of the cities main shopping centres.

Fast forward to April 2026 and we would look to try out another of Prague’s independent vegan eateries, and the place we decided upon was Strecha, a vegan restaurant and social enterprise that specialises in traditional Czech cuisine, reimagined in a plant-based form.

Nearly a strecha too far?

We made a sort-of last-minute decision to go to Strecha and on the night that we went it nearly backfired. Upon arrival we noticed black sheeting covering the insides of the windows which made us wonder if the place was still open (this was an evening visit BTW, the top photo is from a daytime visit back in 2024). We did go inside where we learned that the place had been fully booked for the evening (and it was packed on arrival), and that we might not get a table unless we were prepared to wait for a potentially long time. We decided to persevere with the wait and luckily we were informed that because there was just two of us we would be able to get a table.

No strecha with the menu

With us finally at our table it was on to the task of choosing our dishes from the menu. Food-wise you have a choice of hot and cold starters, and main dishes. We decided to go straight to the main choices. I opted for the Budvar Goulash – Budvar dark beer goulash with soy meat and rosti. Now presentation-wise it did not exactly look the most appetising of dishes, but thankfully it tasted better than it looked.

My dining partner was also satisfied with her dish of Dumplings on red cabbage, stuffed with smoked soya meat and top with gravy and fried onion. As with my dish, again it tasted better than it looked.

Overall the dishes were OK although I did regret not ordering a side serving of fries for mine. Incidentally we did make a previous visit to Strecha back in 2024 when, if I’m being honest, the menu did seem to be better back then when they had some vegan kebab meat dishes available. It’s a shame that those ‘kebab’ dishes weren’t available this time around, in-fact the menu appears to have been streamlined (maybe done for economical reasons?). However judging by how busy the restaurant was on this latest visit, it’s clear that Strecha is very popular with locals and visitors alike so they are clearly doing something right here which is fantastic to see.

Strecha again?

So would I come back to Strecha again? YES, because in the end they do serve some good vegan dishes here that customers do seem to enjoy. Who knows, the menu might change again come our next visit here, and hopefully I’ll get to enjoy the ‘kebab’ dishes again.
