The Pothole, Allestree

Posted on

Making the most of what was a welcome break back home near Derby I spent part of one Friday afternoon visiting the second of two micropubs currently open in the Allestree area of the city. Having visited the No. 189 the previous evening I would now check out what was actually the first micropub to open up in the suburb – The Pothole.

A new Pothole after the old

This particular micropub, a former dry cleaners, is named after a former pub that was situated in the same shopping centre that this current watering hole now resides in. Now I never ventured out to the old Pothole so can’t speak about it, but I can comment on the new Pothole. What I saw here was a clean, well presented micropub of a good number of tables and adequate seating along one side of the venue. Outdoor seating was also present at the front, ideal for what was a warm sunny day.

Back inside and there’s also a TV showing live sport, and further back there’s also a separate seating area complete with comfy sofa that acts as a more quiet section to the venue.

Seat chosen, now for a beer

Now that you’ve decided where to sit, or even just chat at the bar, make sure you get a tasty tipple – and The Pothole will certainly have you covered. For starters you have up to six real ales to choose from along with up to four keg beers. Cider drinkers are also catered for with selection of up to five tipples available. Other drinks on offer include wines, spirits, whiskies and soft drinks. For snacks you have crisps, nuts and pork scratchings available.

Drop again into the Pothole

I first visited The Pothole back in 2017 not long after it first opened, and I came away thinking what a great micropub this was. Six years later for this return visit and my views are the same – this a still a great micropub for many a reason. Good ale range, friendly staff, and a nice airy feel to the place.

Allestree was once described as a real ale desert i.e. there was very little choice for real ale in the area. Now though thanks to The Pothole (and also the No. 189) there is now a good reason to enjoy cask ale in Allestree.

Getting to the venue

The Pothole is located at Park Farm Shopping Centre in Allestree, Derby. The micropub is served by the frequent Allestree bus service that runs to the centre.
